Commercial Property Sustainability

Every year it’s estimated the UK construction industry is responsible for 32% of landfill waste. Around 420 million tonnes of materials are used by the industry each year, and approximately 120 tonnes become waste, which could be underestimated when you consider items such as packaging and transportation.

We believe our industry can do better

At Vantage we understand the necessity of sustainable business and are always looking for ways to take our efforts to the next level.

No matter where we are or what we do, our impact on the environment is always at the forefront of our minds. We work hard as a team to ensure that every decision we make is conscious and careful, as the impact we have is important to us. As an advisory industry, we need to stop thinking about the ‘easy’ option or the ‘way it' always been’ to take better consideration of all the possibilities available. We also should consider good quality sustainable materials, which are long-lasting and can be recycled, renewed or responsibly disposed of at the end of their lifecycle.

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) set out a framework last year as a first step to helping deliver net zero carbon across the whole life of a building for the construction and property industry.

The best way to predict the future is to design it

In October 2021 we adopted our very own Honeybee hive, kept on the grounds of the Burghley House Estate in Stamford not far from one of our offices. The idea behind this is to help prevent the decline of the native Honeybee population in Britain; Honeybees play a critical role in our environment and are becoming more rare, with some of the lowest numbers on record. Numbers have suffered from the environmental impact of using pesticides and the increasing use of imported, non-native Honeybees.

We think it's important to look forward, make conscious decisions about our next steps and use our experiences to improve ourselves. We are currently working on our B-Impact assessment so we can show just how sustainable we are, and work towards improving it even more. We will endeavour to keep you updated on any new initiatives, events or certifications.

The Vantage Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility Approach
At Vantage we recognise the need for urgent action in addressing the climate crisis and rapidly transitioning to a greener, safer and more resilient economy. 2021 and ukCOP26 were all part of what was an unprecedented year that emphasised global connectivity and the importance of governments, businesses and communities around the world working together in tackling global challenges. Inspired by this, Vantage has taken a significant step forward, committing to deliver net-zero carbon emissions by 2025 as a UK business. The challenge is how can we be more efficient in the real term and continue to reduce our emissions. Our road map to net zero, built around our SDG on Climate Action, is helping us break down this target into practical and trackable steps. The Vantage Sustainability Consultancy Group continues to bring together our expertise and provide all the services necessary to support and advise clients on their sustainability and carbon reduction strategies.
Our Business Ethic
Our commitment to acting honestly, with integrity, and always with clients’ best interests at heart, is fundamental to everything we do.
When it comes to our business, our long-standing reputation is built on trust and integrity. It is what gives our clients, colleagues, suppliers, business partners and investors the confidence to work with us.

Our vision is to be the real estate adviser of choice in the markets we serve. We did not set out to be the biggest, just the best, to achieve this we strive to attract, recruit and retain the best people in property, who go the extra mile for their clients.

At all levels, our staff conduct themselves proudly as representatives of Vantage through our Code of Conduct, addressing their responsibilities for the company, each other, and clients, suppliers, contractors and governments.
What are Vantage staff all doing to help make sustainable change?
Change starts at home, and our staff at Vantage are encouraged to be as responsible in work as they are in their personal lives.

Our team are all educated internally to learn about the true benefits of recycling, and taught good office practices such as only printing when needed, through to the encouragement of thoughtful internal debates on ESG and sustainable living.

Each member of the team is graded by the other members of the team on a bi-annual basis to see how we feel we have all been doing when it comes to sustainability with the best performer, i.e the one who cycles to site or gets the train, never prints work, etc, getting our cavorted "Future Greta" award, this statue of Greta is then theirs to proudly display on their desk for the next six months of the year.

By looking to make ESG and sustainability part of our culture and be a fun process we hope to make a longer-term change.
